Adventure Scrapbook – Punta Arenas Penguins

Image
One of the most memorable travel experiences of my life was a trip to Punta Arenas, Chile where we had the opportunity to visit the Otoway Sound Magellanic Penguin Colony.  The chicks hadn’t lost their warm down coats, giving them a soft gray appearance as opposed to the sleek black and white feathers of their parents.  Watching these amazing animals was an indescribable experience I’ll never forget, and I can only hope that I have the opportunity to return one day.

Leaving Civilization in the Dust

Image
I recently got to spend some time in my home state of Wyoming. We visited family and caught up on the local happenings. Thanks to the pleasant fall temperatures, we also got the opportunity to get off the pavement and take in the rugged arid beautiful landscape of my youth. When I was young, my sister and I had mini-bikes that we often took out behind the house and we would explore for hours. We could also ride our horses from home, and in minutes civilization was left in our dust. I often miss those carefree times, which makes me all the more appreciative of the chance to go back and see that some things haven’t changed.

Just released, Gold Nuggets , a young adult historical romance by Lynn Lovegreen. In the shadow of Denali, she has a home, and he finds adventure.   Charlotte Cooper wants to stay near her parents' home in Alaska. McKinley National Park. He discovers two passions, one for Charlotte, and the other for keeping Alaska wildlife from being wiped out like the buffalo.  Charlotte and Henry find an attraction they can’t deny, but can they build a new life together between the wilderness and high society? Lynn Lovegreen grew up in Alaska, and still lives there. She taught English for 20 years before retiring to make more time for writing. She enjoys reading, hanging out with friends and family, and hitting targets with a cowboy action ...

The strong life that never knows harness, The wilds where the caribou call; The fresh, the freedom, the farness— Oh God! How I’m stuck on it all.” - Robert Service, Spell of the Yukon, 1890-

Why I Write

As I’m toiling over complex and obscure punctuation rules, which I often still get confused, I occasionally ask myself, why do I write? The long hours sequestered in my office, hunched over my keyboard until my eyes blur and my muscles ache, writing about outlandish and dangerous exploits when I could be outside having real adventures doesn’t always seem to make sense. Then I think about the many stories I’ve read which have plunged me into remarkable situations and taken me on far-flung journeys around the world. Sometimes I can’t start another book for days, not wanting the sensation of discovery or the adrenaline rush gained from surviving against the odds to ebb. I want to share those feelings of exploration and conquest with others. I want to entertain, provide an enjoyable and interesting way to pass a little free time, and help readers escape to someplace new and unique. If when finished with one of my books the reader feels as if they’ve just returned home from a perilous adve...

Adventure Inspirations – Don’t Be Disappointed

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” - Mark Twain-

Adventure Inspirations – John Muir on Bears

Image
“Bears are made of the same dust as we, and they breathe the same winds and drink of the same waters. A bear’s days are warmed by the same sun, his dwellings are overdomed by the same blue sky, and his life turns and ebbs with heart pulsing like ours. He was poured from the same first fountain. And whether he at last goes to our stingy Heaven or not, he has terrestrial immortality. His life, not long, not short, knows no beginning , no ending. To him life unstinted, unplanned, is above the accidents of time, and his years, markless and boundless, equal eternity.”  - John Muir, 1838, Yosemite, California -

Adventure Inspirations – What Is Adventure?

I’ve recently come across some really awesome adventure quotes that I’ll be sharing every now and then. If you like this one, watch for other, “Adventure Inspirations.” “What is adventure? If a lone wolf lifts his plaintive call into the moonlight near your campsite, you might call that adventure. While you’re sweating like a horse on a climb over a 12,000 foot pass, that could be adventure. When howling head winds press your lips against your teeth, you face a mighty struggle. When your pack grows heavy on your shoulders as your climb a 14,000 foot peak, you feel the adventure. When you suffer freezing temperatures and 20 inches of fresh powder on a hut to hut trip in the Rockies, that could be called adventure. But that’s not what makes an adventure. It’s your willingness to conquer it, and to present yourself at the doorstep of nature. That creates the experience. No more greater joy can come from life than to live inside a moment of adventure. It is the uncommon wilderness ex...

The man kicked Deuce hard in the small of his back and shoved him to the ground. Deuce struggled to rise to his knees, swaying, but keeping his balance. The soldier slung his automatic weapon over his shoulder, backed away several paces, pulled his pistol from its holster and raised the weapon, leaving no doubt in Niki’s mind of his intentions. Deuce was about to be executed. Blurb   Niki Garat tolerates her job and the city, but she lives for her summer vacation with he...

Welcome to this week’s Book Hooks blog hop. Here’s a little teaser from my romantic suspense adventure novel , Marked In Mexico .   This novel has 58 reviews (33 are five star ratings on Amazon with an average rating of 4.5 stars. I hope you enjoy this highly-rated adventure! Excerpt Under any other circumstance the words, “kill another person,” at the end of a sentence would have terrified her, but the way Jack said it only made her heart ache. He had killed before, but it clearly hadn’t been easy and he obviously hadn’t gotten over it. Jessica took his hands in hers and turned them over. They were large and rough. He’d carried no weapon, so he obviously could have killed the man with his bare hands. Whenever he touched her, he was so gentle she just couldn’t believe it was possible. Though he had done nothing but try to protect Megan and her, there was clearly much more to Jack than he had shared and she wasn’t sure she wanted to know the rest of his story, but felt t...

Many Faces of Adventure Fiction

As anyone who follows me knows, I love adventure fiction. I read it, I write it, and it’s my favorite movie genre. One of the most important aspects of a believable adventure is getting the characters into the action realistically. I don’t generally seek out Christian fiction, but I’ve read two books recently that I enjoyed and they got me thinking. Shaken Blessing by Celeste Charlene and Love Takes Flight by Lee Carver both involve volunteer nurses or former nurses, who find themselves embroiled in amazing and emotional adventures as a result of their service, in one instance in Africa and the other in Brazil. The books are very different, but what they have in common is the reason why the characters find themselves in remote and dangerous places, facing challenges they couldn’t have imagined in their former lives.   Years ago I read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and had that similar feeling of being totally entranced by the adventures and people encountered as a...

Behind The Scenes With A Dyslexic Angel

Image
Gay with Mindy I am very pleased to introduce Gay N. Lewis, author of the Sarah series, a must have series for anyone who loves books filled with romance, laughter, and that just leave you with a smile on your face when finished. So, without further ado, here’s Gay and Sarah, and make sure to keep reading to find out about the newest release, upcoming novellas, and comment for a chance at free Amazon download of Sarah’s first adventure. Thank you Kim for inviting me to your site.   From time to time, people ask me how the Sarah series came about. I didn’t plan a sequence, but the idea of Sarah has been with me for decades and finally came to life in 2012.   After the first book, I decided Sarah should help others, so I wrote a sequence.   Four books now tell of Sarah’s adventures, and two more are on the way.   How did you get the idea for Sarah?   Several years ago, I read This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti and loved it.   Th...

So, if this snippet whets your appetite, there’s no better time than the present to get your copy.    Her eyes darted from man to man. She scanned the area and noted that she was still very close to the edge of the ravine. Niki could feel the big horse quiver beneath her and tense, ready to spring at the slightest provocation. She gripped Storm’s sides with her legs and grasped the saddle horn. One man pulled a pistol out of its holster. She doubted he intended to shoot her yet—instant death would be too quick, easy and preferable.   I hope you enjoy the adventure.
