  I can’t believe September is already here. Where has summer gone? I know the first day of fall isn’t until September 22 this year, but once school is back in session and college sports are in full swing, it feels officially fall. Weather wise, this was a crazy summer. Temperatures went from cold to hot and the smoke from wildfires in the west was heavy at times. My garden did okay, but I think it was as confused by the wild temperature swings as I was. I’ve definitely had better production.     WRITING I’m pleased that the first novel in The Beartooth Chronicles, Refuge from the World , is now included in Kindle Unlimited. I can’t believe that summer is almost over. I generally love summer, but this one has been a season of rollercoaster temperatures, lots of smoke from wildfires, and a host of other not-so-pleasant issues, so I won’t be a sad as I am most years to see it go. As an avid gardener, it is fun to watch the garden grow all summer and to be able to enjoy fresh produce as it matures, but there is something special about fall. It is a time to take stock of the garden’s bounty, assess successes and failures, and stow all the supplies for next year. It’s also time to slow down and enjoy the cooler temperatures and changing colors. I hope this fall can also be a time of rejuvenation for all. As summer winds down and we begin to feel the subtle shift of the seasons, I look back with a little disappointment. Summer is usually my favorite season, but it didn’t start out well and ended even worse. Last summer was consumed with sadness and emotional upheaval. I didn’t think it could get worse, but it did. I won’t go into details since everyone has their own issues to deal with. Instead, I’ll share a few highlights. I’ve always loved to garden, and I think this year’s garden is one of my best ever. I also got to spend a lot of time with my sister this summer, but unfortunately, not under the best of circumstances.  Based on temperature, I always think of summer in Wyoming as running from June through August. Technically, the first day of fall this year is September 23, so I guess the summer isn’t over yet, and I’m still hopeful that things will pick up.   FALL FAVORITES I enjoy fall except for the fact that it foreshadows the coming of winter, which is my least favorite season. I love the mild fall temperatures, the slower pace in my tourist town, and the return of college sports. We’ve been using fresh produce since July, but now I’m jumping into harvesting and preserving the remaining produce in my garden. It’s been a little slow this year, but I’ve finally gotten to the point of freezing peas, beans, cabbage, and green chili. I even made my first batch of refrigerator pickles, but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll get enough zucchini to make and can relish. We haven’t been able to get out of town much this summer, but I am holding out hope that this winter will take me to warmer places and great adventures.
