Sneak Peek Sunday - Desperate Dreams

Sneak Peek Sunday is a blog hop that allows readers to sample six paragraphs of an author’s novel. The paragraphs below come from Desperate Dreams, a futuristic romantic adventure through the inhospitable Big Bend region of Texas.
Blood pooled in Nyla’s stinging palm and slid down her wrist. She was afraid the sight might make her sick to her stomach, so she refused the temptation to take her eyes off Ethan. She focused on the sharp chiseled features of his face. Some might have thought the slight upward tilt of his chin looked arrogant, but to her the angle made him look confident and strong and right now, she needed his strength.
Ethan tried to offer comfort, but all Nyla could see in his weak smile and his coal-colored eyes were the depth of the pain he was feeling on her behalf. She hated to see him suffer on her account, but his caring touched her heart.
“Come on man. It can’t be that hard to find,” Ethan demanded as he wiped the blood gliding down Nyla’s arm before it reached her shirt.
“Back off. It’s not as if I want to cause her anymore pain than I have to. You know the lighting in here stinks. I can hardly see what I’m doing.”
Nyla bit down hard on her lip to take her mind off her throbbing hand. She fought to keep from whimpering because she didn’t want Jared to feel bad or for Claire to chicken out.
“Got it,” Jared declared as he held the tiny microchip up in triumph.

Free Book Promotion Sites

There are hundreds of places on the internet that offer free book promotion and I wanted to give a shout out to a couple because they have designed their sites to be a very helpful source for readers looking for free or cheap ebooks. Check out where they list books daily in order from free up to $3.99, including books always priced at those rates as well as temporary promotions and reductions. The books are linked back to Amazon if you want to purchase any, but this site helps to narrow down your search. Another great site is where you can see a brief blurb, author bio and the book cover along with links to Amazon and the author’s website. Visit for Big Horn Storm’s page.

Homerun Hits it out of the Park

Tis the season for baseball and I’ve been cheering the local college teams on as much as our weird weather will allow.  So, if you’re like me and enjoy reading with the season, such as Christmas stories during the holidays, make sure to pick up a copy of Homerun by Ruth Roberts and get into the spirit. This novella mixes in baseball, just enough sass and spice and ample drama to create a real winner. I’ll give you a little teaser, but I don’t want to spoil the story. Go to Prism Book Group or Amazon to learn more about Ruth and to get your copy now as baseball is getting into full swing.
When the seemingly-spoiled socialite, Cynthiana, and the professional baseball player, Roberto, team up for a fundraiser, sparks fly and they soon discover the electrical charge isn’t caused by animosity, but by mutual attraction.  What starts out as a simple straight-forward romance soon becomes complex when Cynthiana’s father attempts to dictate the course of her future and destroy Roberto and his thriving career with the Texas Rangers.  Through threats and scandal Cynthiana remains strong and stands behind the man she loves.

Sneak Peek Sunday

Sneak Peek Sunday is a blog hop that allows readers to sample six paragraphs of an author’s novel. Check out this sneak peak at Big Horn Storm and then hop along for more sneak peeks at other great books. Have fun!

The sound of a man’s voice made Niki’s head whip around as she tried to bring Storm under control. The man was not speaking English and the insignia on his uniform did not belong to the United States military, nor did the uniform sport a maple leaf such as the one she had seen on the helicopter the previous day. Thoughts swirled through her head, making no sense at all, but the one thing she was certain of was that she was in deep trouble.
Niki reined Storm around, now surrounded by five more men. Her body went rigid as the horse’s legs suddenly stiffened. Storm snorted at the closest man and then pawed angrily at the ground. The men began advancing, smiling and laughing. Niki couldn’t understand what they were saying, but as she spied two more dead bodies on the ground, she felt certain they had no intention of helping her.
Her eyes darted from man to man. She scanned the area and noted that she was still very close to the edge of the ravine. Niki could feel the big horse quiver beneath her and tense, ready to spring at the slightest provocation. She gripped Storm’s sides with her legs and grasped the saddle horn. One man pulled a pistol out of its holster. She doubted he intended to shoot her yet—instant death would be too quick, easy and preferable. Niki feared he planned to take out her only mode of escape. She couldn’t allow her beloved horse to be shot at point blank range, but most importantly, she couldn’t be delayed too long or she doubted her grandfather would survive.
With a prayer and a swift kick, Niki informed Storm it was time to run for their lives. The horse sensed the danger and cleared the edge of the ravine before the men could react. Niki held on as tight as she could and leaned back to help the horse keep his balance as he lunged down the slope. Rocks dislodged under the fury of his churning hooves as he barreled down the embankment.
They had nearly reached the creek when the first series of shots rang out. Storm shied and turned to follow the creek downstream rather than plunging into the water with its slick bottom at an uncontrolled speed. Another barrage of gunfire pelted the ground, narrowly missing Niki, but hitting nearby rocks, spraying the horse with sharp stone fragments.
A slight bend in the ravine took them out of sight of the shooters and soon the slope was much less intimidating, making it easier for Storm to cross the creek and climb out of the ravine.  Niki released a sigh of relief and encouraged the horse to take it easy as he began his ascent. They had just reached the top when Niki heard the unmistakable sound of two dirt bikes’ engines firing up.

Welcome to the Blooming Love Spring Blog Hop. I hope you enjoy all the different perspectives on love, find exciting new books, learn about new authors, and of course, take advantage of all the giveaways.

Sometimes love hits hard and fast. Other times love sneaks up and takes hold of your heart before you realize what’s happening, much the same way a bud on a flower’s stem slowly opens to reveal a beautiful spring blossom.

I write romantic adventures and suspense, and they generally follow the blooming love rather than the exploding romance formula (there are plenty of other explosions in my stories).  As the hero and heroine struggle to survive whatever predicament they find themselves in, they inevitable come to rely on each other and reassess how they view themselves and their relationships.  Even in real life, when people face a challenging or terrifying situation together the experience has the potential to tear them apart or bring them together by forging an unbreakable bond through shared sacrifice.

My most recent novel, Big Horn Storm, is a contemporary western romantic adventure set in rugged mountain country. The story combines a too-close-to-home military crisis, a traumatic accident, a terrifying bear encounter, hold-your-breath horseback escapes and an attempt to reconcile the past in an action-packed thriller.  To survive an aggressive invasion by ruthless foreign soldiers, the sheepherder’s granddaughter must test her horse’s strength and her own will to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect those she loves, including the rugged rancher who has always held her heart.

As dramatic as that sounds, how far would you go for love, especially if you didn’t understand your emotions completely or know if your feelings will be reciprocated? In Desperate Dreams, America has become a safe, orderly, predictable place for the majority of the citizenship, but to a few, like Nyla and Ethan, it has become a prison. Inseparable since childhood, but now faced with being torn apart, they are determined to change the course of their future. As Nyla struggles to understand her deepening feelings for Ethan, they embark on a desperate journey for freedom through the inhospitable Big Bend region of Texas. But, is the cost of freedom and forbidden love too high?

In some adventures the situation is just too dangerous for the hero and heroines to recognize the signs of falling in love or access the costs. While fighting for their lives, love is the last thing on their mind, and surviving a treacherous experience will inevitably change the most well-defined priorities. In Marked in Mexico an idyllic Caribbean vacation turns deadly when hostages are taken at one of Mexico’s most popular Mayan ruins. The kidnappers believe the abduction will be a simple way to negotiate the release of a colleague from a Texas prison, but matters become complicated and the stakes much higher when they realize one of their hostages is the daughter of a powerful U.S. Senator and another is an ex-Army Ranger who has no intention of playing by the rules. While trying to stay alive in the unforgiving jungle will they forge a bond to last a lifetime or push the terrifying memories, and each other far away?
