The Big Apple

I don’t get to New York as often as I’d like, but when I do, I enjoy every minute I spend in the Big Apple.   It always feels a bit chaotic, but to those who live there I imagine it’s better described as organized chaos. The city seems to sizzle with energy and there is never a shortage of things to do or see. I’m not sure I could live there since I need my sleep and there really is too much going on to rest, but I’ll continue to visit as often as possible and I can always sleep when I get home.

Flee into the jungle and fight for your life on this week’s Sneak Peek Sunday

For this week’s Sneak Peek Sunday blog hop, let’s head to Mexico, and when paradise turns deadly, flee into the jungle and fight for your life - Marked in Mexico .   Jessica cringed as she watched one man hold Jack’s head back while the other man landed three solid punches into Jack’s gut. He barely flinched as each blow landed, but she did. Jessica felt responsible for the pain, realizing the noise which had distracted the man from touching her had been no accident. Now Jack was paying the price. She didn’t understand why he had done it, but was thankful.   As she was shoved into the van, the two men released Jack and assumed their places in the front seats. She hit her head on the floor and winced as a sharp bolt of pain shot through her skull. Jessica struggled to right her balance, rolling around to a sitting position with her back against the van wall and bracing her feet to keep from tumbling over as the van jerked forward and bumped along down the dirt road.   One

Setting The Scene

The setting is clear in my mind, but how accurate are my memories? I’m pleased to report, not bad. My latest work in progress is set in a remote section of Wyoming where cell coverage is spotty at best, elevations exceed 9,000 feet on the road and some peaks top 11,000 feet, the weather is unpredictable, the scenery is stunning, and the people who live there are a special breed of tough.    During my last visit to the area I set out to refresh my memory along the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. The green grasses and vegetation against the red dirt is a dramatic contrast, and the elk, deer, and moose are abundant and on the move, trying to build up their stores of body fat before the harsh winter approaches. The view from the highest bridge in Wyoming is spectacular even on a drab day and the immensity of the landscape is humbling.   Combining the rugged environment, rapidly changing weather, lack of full-time residents, and the physical barriers to communication, I know I’ve found

Dreams of Gold

Take one hunky sheriff of the old West’s Wyoming Territory and add a feisty city gal from the East and you have the makings of a truly entertaining and exciting story. This book contained multiple plot elements, and was well developed and written. If I had one complaint, it would be that the story wrapped up too quickly. The sparks between the characters were strong enough to carry the story even further. Overall, Dreams of Gold was a great book and I look forward to reading more works by this author.   For more on Linda Carroll-Bradd visit http://www.lindacarroll-bradd.com

Kokush inhaled the smoke from his pipe and forced the intoxicating tobacco deep into his lungs. Still, no clear visions penetrated the fog, only a feeling of dread he could not explain or expel from his mind. The Asháninka men, bodies painted and seated on woven mats around their revered shaman, passed a hollowed-out gourd filled with thick, bitter liquid. Each man sipped the hallucinogenic drug made from a native vine and handed the bowl to the next, until the syrup was gone. A low beat from the two-headed monkey-skin drum grew louder as a melancholy mantra emanated from the group, drowning out the deafening hum of the nighttime insects. The men rose and continued to chant and sing as they began the an

Enjoy the adventure here and the adventures to come.   BIG HORN STORM   The sound of a man’s voice made Niki’s head whip around as she tried to bring Storm under control. The man was not speaking English and the insignia on his uniform did not belong to the United States military, nor did the uniform sport a maple leaf such as the one she had seen on the helicopter the previous day. Thoughts swirled through her head, making no sense at all, but the one thing she was certain of, was that she was in deep trouble. Niki reined Storm around, now surrounded by five more men. Her body went rigid as the horse’s legs suddenly stiffened. Storm snorted at the closest man and then pawed angrily at the ground. The men beg

Sneak Peek Sunday – Desperate Dreams

Sneak Peek Sunday is a weekly blog hop that allows readers to sample six paragraphs of an author’s novel. This week I’m sharing an excerpt from Desperate Dreams (Kindle and Nook only $2.99). For the latest insights, information, and insanity follow me at https://twitter.com/kimmcmahill . With a ruling authority too powerful to challenge, only the most courageous will dare to defy the new order and embrace forbidden love. Nyla wasn’t sure how much longer she could continue to do this, but most of all she didn’t understand why no one else saw how fundamentally wrong the Facility was. The prison held thousands of people who would have been free just several decades ago. Their crimes weren’t crimes. They were simply trying to live the life America claimed to offer and at one time, the country had been exactly that place. She sat and bowed her head, rubbing her temples, trying to force back the headache she generally got while inside the Facility.   Maybe the fluorescent light was t
