It Came in a Dream

Image
The plot for Deadly Exodus came to me in a dream. A group of people (not sure if I was there since most of my dreams feel like third person) huddled in the back of a really old Datsun pickup trying to sneak into Mexico. When I woke up, I thought about why Americans would be unable to get into Mexico and what was driving the desire. What came out of that bizarre dream was a heart-wrenching dystopian tale of survival and forbidden love, steeped in danger and tension, that will hopefully leave you breathless. Here’s a short blurb. It’s available through most of the major online booksellers or read more on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Deadly-Exodus-Kim-McMahill-ebook/dp/B07NMV448G/ Their love is forbidden. Their lives are in danger. In a shattered America where men are hunted and relationships outlawed, Nyla has only one choice: defy the regime or lose everything. Protecting Ethan means risking her grandmother’s safety and abandoning her imprisoned mother, but Nyla refuses to su...

Exaggerated Real life Adventures

Image
Fishing stories have become synonymous with exaggeration. No harm is ever intended, but after countless retelling of the story, it often morphs into something much more interesting and exciting than the original. The two-pound fish that took several minutes to reel in evolves into an eight-pound monster which battled valiantly for hours before succumbing to your superior skill. This is how many of my real-life adventures have infiltrated my action-adventure novels. I’ve explored numerous Mayan ruins tucked into steamy bug-infested jungles in several countries, yet I’ve always managed to avoid running into looters or ruthless kidnappers; I’ve pondered the current of the Rio Grande, but have suppressed the urge to jump into the churning mud and attempt an illegal border crossing; and I have ridden horseback down a terrifyingly-steep slope in which stopping was not an option as scenes from Man From Snowy River flashed through my mind, all without a single gunshot from a foreign enemy aim...

Deadly Exodus Excerpt

Image
Here’s an excerpt for my dystopian novel, Deadly Exodus. This novel is appropriate for the Young Adult reader as well. It is available in paperback and ebook from most on-line retailers or the paperback can be ordered from your favorite bookstore. Here’s the Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NMV448G/ Nyla wasn’t sure how much longer she could continue to do this, but most of all she didn’t understand why no one else saw how fundamentally wrong the Facility was. The prison held thousands of people who would have been free just several decades ago. Their crimes weren’t crimes. They were simply trying to live the life America claimed to offer and at one time, the country had been exactly that place. She sat and bowed her head, rubbing her temples, trying to force back the headache she generally got while inside the Facility.   Maybe the fluorescent light was too bright or the air too stale, but no matter the reason, the pain crept behind her eyes as she settled in fo...

Deadly Exodus into #Mexico

Image
Deadly Exodus takes place in New Mexico and Texas, culminating in a harrowing attempt to cross the border into Mexico. Yes, you read correctly, the characters are trying to escape into Mexico. Deadly Exodus is a gritty dystopian thriller, but don’t panic if you’re not into sci-fi. The technology in the book is currently available, though not in mainstream use. As with most of my books, it is an adventure with plenty of suspense, but also has a forbidden romance. Is the government becoming too powerful to challenge? The Mystery of Ebook Pricing

Image
I don’t always understand how publishers and Amazon price ebooks. Sometimes prices are reduced for promos, like A Taste of Tragedy was awhile back, though the price still hasn’t been raised to its original price of $3.99 from its currently discounted price of $0.99. I have no idea when that might happen. As for boxed sets, they’re often a major bargain. I assume this is to encourage readers to try a new author with very little to lose. My Kindle boxed set is only $3.99 and it includes three of my adventure novels. If you downloaded each separately the cost would be $10.97. So, whatever the reason I always like to pass on to readers that if you haven’t tried my books, the Kindle boxed set is a very economical way to go. If you have read these three novels, I'd love to hear which is your favorite.

Teaser Tuesday - Deadly Exodus

Claire’s thoughts fixed on Jared and she wanted to know the truth. She was afraid for his and Ethan’s future since no one knew for sure what that was. The uncertainty drove her to push her mother on the issue. “What destiny? Claire demanded. “Men never come back here. Where do they go and what happens to them when they leave here, Mother?” “That doesn’t need to concern you.” “I want to know, Mother. Tell me the truth. If you want me to understand you and the life you embrace you have to be honest with me.” “Hmm,” Katherine hesitated. She wasn’t sure how much she dare share, but she wanted Claire to accept her future and break free of her less than desirable companions. Claire had to understand the authorities were only doing what was best for the citizens. “It’s more of a federal issue than a state issue, but I do know that males report to one of three occupational categories. Many men work in the factories in the central manufacturing zone on the East Coast, others volunteer ...

Nuggets From Life in Fiction – Paradise in the Desert

Image
Nyla was awed as she took in the sight of a giant palm tree several hundred yards upstream. The tree shot at least thirty feet skyward, towering over the shorter riparian vegetation around it. Thick dense fronds dripped down and brushed the sand underneath. The tree looked so out of place in the desert, but it also looked peaceful and promising and she couldn’t take her eyes off it. Moonbeams danced through the surf-board-size fronds and the gentle breeze rustled the crisp fronds, making them sing like a grass skirt going through the motions of the hula. Nyla knew this was the place ¾ the tropical paradise in the desert ¾ the best place to navigate the waters of the Rio Bravo to freedom. I’ll never forget the first time I came upon this unique spot in Big Bend National Park. It was so wonderfully out of place that I knew it would make it into a story one day, which it did in Deadly Exodus .
