Action Movies and Car Technology

My favorite movies involve exotic adventures, such as in Sahara or Australia, which is why I write what I write.  I also enjoy a good action flick. In fact, I have all the Bourne and Mission Impossible movies on DVD, which I re-watch at least once a year. But, with our ever evolving automobile technology what will those classic car-chase scenes become? In a recent car commercial it showed where the car sensed an object behind it and automatically applied the brakes. How would Jason Bourne hotwire a car on the rooftop parking lot, throw it into reverse, speed toward the lip of the building, and catapult the car over the ledge? In the future will smoke just roll from the tires as he floors the gas pedal and the car holds the brakes down against his will? And, what about stability control? The instant a car senses a slip, it shuts itself down. This one has actually plagued me numerous times while trying to get up the last switchback on a steep snow-covered lane leading home. I could see dry ground just feet away, but my SUV decided to apply the brakes, and back down the mountain I went. Will those adrenaline-pumping chase scenes of the modern movie be forced to progress along a straight line? I have to assume a “cookie” in a front wheel-drive vehicle with stability control, or a one-eighty direction change are stunts of the past.  Will the parking assist function allow our hero to ram into the bad guy to escape being pinned in? I’m sure my fellow creative writers will find ways to overcome these obstacles and keep the tension high and the action pulsing, but when I close my eyes and picture car chases in the latest techno-cars I can’t help but laugh and ponder the future of high-speed drama.

Rescue, Romance, and Adventure

Cairo by Victoria Pitts-Caine is an entertaining story filled with mystery, suspense, and international intrigue. While eluding one dangerous situation after another, solving riddles, and piecing together cryptic clues, the characters are forced to test their faith. If that isn’t enough, a touching romance blossoms between two people from vastly different cultures, which only makes matters much more complicated.  This wonderful novel keeps you turning the pages as the characters embark on a remarkable adventure to rescue loved-ones, and attempt to explore the feelings developing between them.

New Release by Award Winning Author

Daddy Wanted by Penelope Marzec was recently released by Prism Book Group.  Penelope grew up along the Jersey shore. She started reading romances at a young age and fell hopelessly in love with happy endings. Two of her inspirational romances won EPIC’s eBook Award and another was a finalist in that contest. Her paranormal, Irons In The Fire, was a nominee for a Romantic Times Reviewers Choice award.

In her latest release, Daddy Wanted, Grace, a game designer in NYC, wakes up one morning to discover she has lost her job and her roommate is pregnant. Determined to solve both problems, she searches for jobs online and sets up an ad to find a daddy for the child. How hard could it be in a city of eight million people? She soon learns it is both risky and dangerous. She wonders if Russell, who lives downstairs, is a safer bet, but why is he always stalking her? And why is it that the only one who will listen to her is her roommate’s turtle?
Russell, an IT repairman, is going to be the best man for a wedding in Minnesota. He needs a date, but the woman on his arm must be the Perfect Woman. According to his list of specifications, Grace will fit the bill—until he finds a pregnancy test kit box in the garbage. Deciding she’s only a little bit pregnant, he offers her a business deal, an all-expenses paid trip to Minnesota with no strings attached. But when Grace insists on bringing her roommate along, Russell is in for a surprise.

Cairo the Novel Released Today

I hope you enjoyed last week’s post on Alvarado Gold, the precursor to Victoria Pitts-Caine’s latest adventure, Cairo. This week as Cairo is released I wanted to introduce you to the author of this wonderful series, Victoria Pitts-Caine.

Q. Why did you pick Inspirational romance as your genre?
At first, I wanted to write an adventure novel. I didn’t see myself as a romance writer, but I learned quickly if I didn’t have a genre, I wasn’t going anywhere. I added a romance to my first book, Alvarado Gold, and because of my beliefs and preferences in what I read myself, inspirational was the next step.

Q. Who is one of your favorite characters in your books and why?
There is a little bit of “me” in all of my female characters. Addie Brown is about as close to me as any of my heroines since the book is based on a family story of my own. I’m technically Addie in the family breakdown of the six cousins in the book.

Q. How long does it take you to write a book?
It usually takes me about two years. However, I have one on the back burner I haven’t gotten beyond the first chapter. It is written in a style I’m not familiar with and it takes me to a different place that takes considerable thought.

Q. How did you come up with your titles?
Alvarado Gold came from the name of the small town near where my family originally settled in Texas. Cairo, which is the next book in the series, follows Addie and Gary on an ill-fated vacation to Egypt. The Tempering Agent is also set in Egypt and is the third in the series. The title for that book came from the agent mixed into clay that gives it strength and stability. Alvarado Gold and Cairo are available on Amazon and The Tempering Agent will be released this year from PRISM BOOKGROUP. Cairo may also be purchased from the PRISM BOOK GROUP website.

Q. When did you start writing?
I wrote a story for an adoption magazine years ago and was urged to have it published in a national magazine. When I didn’t get any takers, I set writing aside for another twenty years until I started attending a writing critique group.

Q. How hard was it to find a publisher?
I think the real question for me is: was it hard to find the right publisher? I wanted my three books to be with the same house and when I saw that wasn’t going to happen I looked for a long time to find a house to take the other two. I actually was just short of signing a contract when I realized I couldn’t do everything that particular publisher wanted. As they say, good things come to those who wait because my current publisher is awesome.

Q. What’s new with your writing?
I had an Easter novella released from PRISM BOOK GROUP this past March. The name of the story is Like a Lily.

I’m currently working on a time travel centered around an old mansion in up- state New York and I have an historical short that I may rewrite for republication, too. It is set during the Civil War.

 Cairo Blurb

Rayhan Shenouda, an Egyptian working at the American Embassy, agrees to help but his desire is to win Liz’s heart. Following his traditional customs, and much to her surprise, he proposes within days of their meeting.
Will the Wright’s be found? Can Rayhan and Liz’s love withstand an inevitable collision of cultures and customs? Or will it all end at the hands of a nomad insurgent named Ahmad?

Alvarado Gold

I would like to introduce writer, Victoria Pitts-Caine. Her latest novel, Cairo, is scheduled to be released next week and is a sequel to Alvarado Gold. In anticipation of this exciting event I wanted to share a little bit about Alvarado Gold, where Addie’s adventures begin.

Victoria first attempted writing twenty years ago when she published a small article in an adoptive parent magazine.  Then her super-mom gene took over and she enjoyed the events surrounding her daughters' lives:  school, sports, music, dance and cheer.

When her oldest left for college and the empty nest syndrome set in, Victoria began researching her family genealogy.  After several years of investigation, she felt some of the family stories needed to be told.  From one of them, her first novel began to take shape.

Alvarado Gold is an inspirational novel with a mixture of adventure, intrigue and romance. The heroine, Addie Brown, reconnects with her cousins at her grandfather's funeral, but there’s one cousin missing, Donnie. Is it by choice or does he have some other motive? As she's researching family documents, one of which refers to gold buried near the small Texas town of Alvarado, she meets Gary Wright, who touches her empty heart.  Gary insists on helping Addie and her cousins with their quest, but then strange occurrences and threatening notes lead her to believe Gary is working with Donnie. Addie tries to unravel the family secrets, be the first to reach the gold and deal with her own indecision. Should she trust Gary? If she does, she’ll need to tell him the secret she’s kept hidden in her heart.

Other than writing, Victoria enjoys reading, craft work, and collectibles.  She is also an exotic gemstone collector and a HAM radio operator.

Blurb:

As the hot, oppressive Texas heat takes the breath from her lungs, Addie Brown stands at her grandfather's grave. Deep within her, she senses her anchor to family is gone. She looks across the freshly dug chasm at three of her four cousins. Nothing more than smiling faces on Christmas cards and vacation photos, she remembers once when they were close but something happened.

Snapping her back to reality, the minister reads, To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven. She wonders when will be my time? But Addie has bargained with God and lost and she feels she can never share her secret with anyone. But through an unusual turn of events, she realizes there is a truth and meaning to the passage from Ecclesiastes that begins to drive her life.

Excerpt:

Mollie wrapped her leash around my legs. When my neighbor, Mrs. Nicholson’s, white Persian came into view, I knew I was in trouble. I dropped the leash but not before Mollie’s chase spun me around. I twisted around like a rangy ballerina attempting her first pirouette, landing next to the back tire, unharmed and embarrassed. So much for a light-footed first impression.

When Gary realized I wasn’t hurt, he tried hard not to laugh at me, “Are you okay?”

“I will be as soon as we get Mollie corralled. Let’s go.”

From the heat I felt on my cheeks, I knew they were the same color as the car. How graceful could I be? I couldn’t even stand on my own two feet. Gary offered me his hand. I couldn’t help but catch his infectious laugh. He pulled me up. I swung in closer to him than I’d intended and for one brief moment, we stood toe-to-toe. I looked up at him and my blush grew deeper. Stepping back, I made room for him to reach the door handle. He placed his other hand on my waist. Opening the door, he guided me into my seat. He reached over and buckled the belt, turned and whistled for Mollie.

Lifting Mollie into the back seat, he brushed his lips across my forehead. “There, all tucked in.”

I touched his arm. He came closer, I closed my eyes and he kissed me full on the mouth. It was a long, passionate kiss leaving me hoping for more.

I heard the little voice, Be careful, Addie. Don’t go too fast. Silly little voice.

Happy Independence Day

Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. Every year Americans revel in this Federal holiday with fireworks, picnics, parades, and fun with family and friends. And, hopefully everyone takes a few moments to remember those who have, and continue to, sacrifice for our freedoms.

Here’s wishing everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July.
