The Dolphin and Me #Giveaway
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its
net of wonder forever.
Jacques Yves Cousteau, Oceanographer
The Dolphin and Me by Gail Pallotta
I stood
beside the pool in Sea World in Orlando, Florida, and yearned for a picture of a
dolphin. Bystanders swished bottles in the water trying to get the attention of
the graceful mammals. I didn’t, because I feared a container might hurt one of
them. Hoping one would rise up, I focused my camera. The man beside me, who
wiggled a bottle in the water, left. Lo and behold, a dolphin raised its head
right in front of me.
Surprised, I
fumbled with the camera. The huge creature posed with the big smile typical of
dolphins and didn’t budge until I snapped its picture. Then it joined the other
porpoises.
As soon as we
returned home, I read Whales, Dolphins & Porpoises, by Ronald M Lockley. He wrote about Frank Robson, who
took care of porpoises in Mareineland at Napier in Hawke’s Bay off New
Zealand’s North Island. Once as he fed them he willed them to swim around in
the pool. Not only did they do it, but when praised for it, they lifted their
heads and shoulders.
In Communication
Between Man & Dolphin, John C. Lily, M.D., records fishermen in France
in 70 A D and in Greece in 200 A D who shared some of their catch with dolphins
that directed fish into their nets.
My curiosity running on high after the research, I contacted
a trainer at Sea World. She explained it was difficult to say what the dolphin that
posed for me was doing. She suggested I amused it. Either way, I have a great
picture of an aquatic friend.
Nature lovers who enjoy dolphins will also like the
setting in my upcoming release, Hair Calamities and Hot Cash. It takes place in
the North Carolina Mountains amid that area’s breath-taking scenery.
It’s “A comedic romp
from small town to big city in search of missing money, hair catastrophes, and
love. A truly fun read”– Cynthia Hickey, author of the Shady Acres Mystery
series.

DeleteDolphins are interesting creatures - and Gail nabbed a great picture. Wouldn't you love to know what the dolphin was thinking as it "posed"?
ReplyDeleteHi Carlene, I sure would.
