Adventure Scrapbook – More Adventure to Come

The word adventure means something different to nearly everyone.  To some, adventure may be trying a new restaurant, genre, or hairstyle, and to others, true adventure can only be defined by climbing the highest peaks or rafting the most dangerous rivers.  To me, adventure is somewhere in between.

Through my writing I strive to explore the gamut of adventure with a spattering of actual experiences embellished and tossed in with stories of survival conjured from my imagination. In real life I have an intense craving to see as much of this fascinating world as possible, explore different cultures, taste unfamiliar foods, and meet new people.

For those who have been following my blog, I hope you’ve enjoyed my Adventure Scrapbook, and to those just joining in, welcome.  Whether through story or through real life, best wishes for many exciting adventures to come.

Autumn Dreams

As I’ve been enjoying the beautiful fall colors, what better time to introduce Sharon McGregor, and her newest romance novella, Autumn Dreams, which takes place on the prairies in the late 1940s.

Sharon is a west coast transplant from the Canadian prairies. Her imagination and story weaving got its start when she was an only child living on a farm. She’s moved on from cowgirl dreams to romance and mystery, but hasn’t lost her love for horses. When not writing or reading, she’s busy with the two shops she shares with her daughter- an ice cream and candy store and a bath boutique.  In spite of her eternal quest to escape the cold, she does spend time at ice rinks watching her grandchildren figure skate and play hockey. When she can summon up the nerve to get on a plane (she’s terrified of flying like Maddie in Northern Lights) she likes to visit with her son and grandchildren who are still knee deep in the prairies. Sharon loves endings with happy resolutions which is why she enjoys writing romance and cozy mysteries. Autumn Dreams (blurb below) is her second romance novella with Prism Books.

BLURB

Maggie arrives at her new teaching job, to board with a family she's prepared to like. What she isn't prepared for is her landlady's brother Marshall who seems to hate her on sight. She is captivated by Ellen's six year old daughter Emma who is having identity problems when faced with the arrival of a new baby. Then Ellen goes into labour in the middle of a storm and Maggie must face her fears to help. Along the way she helps a family grow closer together but what about her hopes for the future? Can she get past the wall Marshall has set up and does she really have a future here amongst the people she has grown to care for?

'A' Isn't Just For Adventure

I would like to welcome and thank Rachel A. James for being a guest on my blog.  Please read on and enjoy!

A’ stands for…

People often ask me why I include the ‘A’ in my pen name. I never used to use it, I’d simply be ‘Rachel James’. But, when starting to think about my author branding, and what made me unique as a writer, I realized that the presence of my middle initial, served a purpose. I also like to distinguish between my personal life, Rachel James, and my writer’s life, Rachel A. James. First and foremost, ‘A’ stands for Alice, (which as a child I detested). I recently discovered it means ‘noble woman’, and, I confess, I rather like it!

However the ‘A’ represents far more for me as a writer…

A stands for Author

As I finished writing my first novel, I also began to market myself as an author. I started my website, and other forms of social media. Seeing the ‘A’ in my name reminded me that I was an author, not just a writer. I might not have been published, but I had written a book. I found this immensely encouraging when the critiques and rejections started coming in from the publishing industry. Even now as I have just finished my second novel and commence on the third, reminding myself that I am an ‘author’ helps keep me motivated when the doubt starts to creep in.

A stands for Authenticity

My debut novel, ‘The Forgotten Princess of Elmetia’, is an inspirational medieval romance. Although the medieval genre has elements of both history and fantasy, I like to think that my writing is authentic. By which, I mean, everything that happens in it is plausible. For example, ‘Forgotten Princess’ is set in 7th century Britain, which is very early medieval, and at this time, there were no such things as castles. Most palaces were made mostly out of wood. This was a problem to me. I wanted to create a fairytale type kingdom while still remaining authentic and true to historical records.  So, I chose to use a restored Roman Fortress, which was very similar to castles of the later medieval period. What I love about the early medieval times, is that very little is known historically, so there is a little more room for the author’s imagination!

A stands for Adventure

Most importantly, I describe my novels as adventure-driven. I strive for an equal balance of plot versus character, but I write them relatively fast paced, making them fun and exciting. This is an element I always look for when choosing a book… after all, what woman doesn’t want to go on a romantic adventure?

About Rachel

Rachel A. James grew fascinated with the medieval time period as a child. Dubbed a bookworm from a young age, Rachel found herself surrounded by places steeped in history and adventure. She enjoyed trips with her family to visit nearby derelict castles and Roman ruins, and that coupled with a zealous imagination and love for stories, sparked her interest in knights, fortresses and ancient kingdoms.

Born and bred in England, Rachel writes adventure driven historical romance, she is also a pastor’s wife, and has three beautiful little princesses. She minored in creative writing at university and strives to entertain, inspire and encourage others in their own spiritual journey. She’s also captivated by romantic tales… combine it with a little history and a hot cup of tea, and she’s smitten! Find her at www.rachelajames.com for more information.

A heartwarming story about the resilience of true love, inspired by a biblical account of greatness, courage, and foretold prophecy...
Princess Michal was the youngest daughter of Saul, the first king of Israel.  In an age when fathers arranged marriages, Michal dared to fall in love with a handsome young musician named David, from the little town of Bethlehem.  As recounted in the Bible, Michal helped David escape from her insanely jealous father.  King Saul punished his daughter with forced marriage to a distant war lord.  Princess Michal unexpectedly returns from seven years of exile to find a changed world. Most of her relatives are dead.  David has become King of Judea.  He has acquired six additional wives, one of whom is a princess from Geshur. Adventure Scrapbook – Thailand’s Grand Palace

Bangkok’s Grand Palace is located on sprawling grounds with over 100 buildings, including the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The architecture represents over 200 years of royal history, and the ornate and colorful structures are simple awe-inspiring. A visitor could spend days exploring and admiring the stunning architecture, fanciful figures, and amazing temples. Unfortunately this country has experienced its share of turmoil recently, so I’m thankful I was able to visit when I did.
