It seems all my favorite summer memories involve escaping the heat with nature’s diverse environments – lakes, rivers, mountains. I have many fond memories of kicking back with friends and family amid stunning mountain scenery of tall pines, streams fed with snow-runoff, crystal-clear ice-cold lakes and elk, deer and moose grazing in open meadows. Days were spent exploring the back roads and trails on horseback, on foot or by four-wheeler and fishing, but the nights sitting around the campfire were magic. With the only light coming from the fire, moon and stars the scene is set for romance and snuggling with your sweetie, relaxing and sharing stories with the important people in your life.

Find out which environment is best for escaping the heat and finding love, the jungle in Marked in Mexico, the desert in Desperate Dreams or the high mountains in Big Horn Storm.

Sparks Featuring Bonnie McCune

I kicked off “Sparks” last week, a weekly series where I’ve asked some of my favorite authors to share the sparks which have fueled their stories. The responses vary wildly, but are equally entertaining and insightful. I hope you enjoyed the inaugural post with Gay N. Lewis and the inside scoop on Sarah: Laney’s Angel.  This week Bonnie McCune shares the fodder for several of the scenes in her upcoming novel. I hope they ignite your creative juices.

Bonnie McCune: I don't have many adventures like Kim does.  I'm more of an observer.  But my activities and those of my friends and family certainly feed some of the scenes.  In my upcoming book, Burn--Playing with Fire, I have a mountain bike riding sequence.  I've ridden in the mountains of Colorado, and my son competes in cyclocross races (in which you have to carry your bike over creeks and climb rocky slopes with your bike).  The forest fire sequence in which the heroine, Elaine, gets caught originated in a true incident during which a friend of mine had to evacuate a camping area to escape a blaze.

Bonnie McCune published her first novel, A Saint Comes Stumbling In, with Prism Book Group last year and followed up with a novella, Heart-Strong, earlier this year.  However, she considers her initiation into writing came at age 10 with a poem sent to and immediately rejected by the "Saturday Evening Post."  She's written nonfiction for decades as well as short stories.  You can sample her work at her website www.BonnieMcCune.com.

Sparks Featuring Gay N. Lewis

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen, heard or done something that has sparked an idea for a book. Sometimes the catalyst is tiny like when I heard the name Deuce and decided I had to use that name in a book and what else could Deuce be but a cowboy? That flickering notion drew out many memories of various horseback adventures and the next thing you know, Big Horn Storm became a reality.

I decided to ask some of my favorite authors to share the sparks which have fueled their stories. You may be surprised how even small things can morph into something special and drive the plot in unusual directions. I’ll be posting a new author each week until the idea tank is empty. Maybe their creative triggers will ignite your imagination.

Gay kicks off the series. I hope you enjoy her perspective and learn about making research pay – I did. Now, here are Gay and Sarah: Laney’s Angel.

Gay N. Lewis: How do I prepare for adventure in my books? I don’t. I’m similar to Sarah, my dyslexic little angel character. Amazing, unintended stuff just happens to me, and many of my episodes find their way to scenes in my Sarah Series.

In Sarah: Laney’s Angel, an invisible Sarah convinced Cannon to invite Laney to a nice restaurant. When Cannon asked Laney a few embarrassing questions, Sarah decided to help the lady avoid answers to him, but how? Surely turning on the overhead fire sprinklers would create a diversion. Oops! She caused every diner in the place to receive a deluge of water. Utter chaos developed. So much for that romantic interlude.

In planning this scene, I asked my hubby to take me to a steak restaurant so I could make sure those sprinklers existed overhead the way I wanted to describe them in the book. Am I a con artist or what? I escaped cooking and enjoyed a lovely night out. I arranged that evening, but how about the time I accidently drove down a railroad track in the dead of night? That was an adventure to remember. Sarah is destined to have that unforgettable experience soon.

Gay N. Lewis is the author of two books published through Prism Book Group. Sarah: A Mission of Love and Sarah: Laney’s Angel. The third book in the series, Sarah and the Widow’s Mate is scheduled for a fall 2013 release. For more information on Gay and her novels visit http://www.GayNLewis.com. Gay posts each Monday on her blog, http://www.gaynlewis.blogspot.com and welcomes followers on Twitter and Triberr. I appreciate Gay dropping by my blog. Be sure to check back next week for more inspirational sparks.

Sneak Peek Sunday - Marked in Mexico

Sneak Peek Sunday is a weekly blog hop that allows readers to sample six paragraphs of an author’s novel. This week I’m giving readers a taste of Marked in Mexico, so read on and when paradise turns deadly, flee into the jungle and fight for your life.

Megan stepped into the water. With the first step, the water hit her mid-thigh, but she didn’t go down. She took a second and it had risen to her waist, but she stood. With the third step, the current knocked her off her feet. She went under and Jessica gasped. Megan’s head popped back up ten yards downstream and she began to stroke. It looked like she was edging closer to the opposite bank when the river turned around a bend and she was lost to their view.

A shot rang through the trees and the voices were upon them. Jack grabbed Jessica and kissed her hard on the mouth and then shouted at her to go.

Jessica wasn’t as tall and strong as Megan, so she decided on a different approach. She took a running start and dove as far as she could out into the river. The last thing she heard as she went under was a string of gunfire and as she surfaced in the middle of the river downstream, a loud explosion rumbled through the corridor between the trees.

She flailed frantically and went under again. She swallowed a mouthful of dirty river water and spit as she surfaced. She tried to remember what Jack had told her. As his voice eased into her head, she quit fighting. She took slow strong strokes as the current pulled her down the river, but she kept her head above water. As she edged closer to the far side she could see Megan running down the bank screaming at her to keep stroking.

Just as Jessica thought her muscles had nothing left to give, she felt Megan’s hand grasp her wrist. She began churning her legs and realized she could touch the bottom. With Megan pulling and her feet pushing at the bottom, Jessica was able to scramble up the bank. She rolled over onto her back and gasped for air. It took several moments to realize she was still alive and once she was certain she would live, her thoughts quickly returned to Jack.

She pushed herself to a sitting position and looked upstream. All she could see was a plume of smoke. They had been carried a long way from the scene. She tried to get her bearings. Jack had said to head for the helicopter, but she didn’t want to leave him.

Spring Fling Givaway Hop

Welcome to the Spring Fling Giveaway Hop.  To a randomly-selected recipient I’ll be giving away his or her choice of a free autographed copy or a download of Big Horn Storm, Desperate Dreams or Marked in Mexico (books can only be shipped to a U.S. address). Just leave a comment between now and midnight on May 7, 2013. An email address is needed in order to contact the recipient. To help make your decision easier on which book to select, here’s a short blurb from each.

Big Horn Storm is a contemporary western romantic adventure set in rugged mountain country. The story combines a too-close-to-home military crisis, a traumatic accident, a terrifying bear encounter, hold-your-breath horseback escapes and an attempt to reconcile the past in an action-packed thriller.  To survive an aggressive invasion by ruthless foreign soldiers, the sheepherder’s granddaughter must test her horse’s strength and her own will to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect those she loves, including the rugged rancher who has always held her heart.
Desperate Dreams - America has become a safe, orderly, predictable place for the majority of the citizenship, but to a few, like Nyla and Ethan, it has become a prison. Inseparable since childhood, but now faced with being torn apart, they are determined to change the course of their future. As Nyla struggles to understand her deepening feelings for Ethan, they embark on a desperate journey for freedom through the inhospitable Big Bend region of Texas. With a ruling authority too powerful to challenge, only the most courageous will dare to defy the new order and embrace forbidden love.
Marked in Mexico - an idyllic Caribbean vacation turns deadly when hostages are taken at one of Mexico’s most popular Mayan ruins. The kidnappers believe the abduction will be a simple way to negotiate the release of a colleague from a Texas prison, but matters become complicated and the stakes much higher when they realize one of their hostages is the daughter of a powerful U.S. Senator and another is an ex-Army Ranger who has no intention of playing by the rules. While trying to stay alive in the unforgiving jungle will they forge a bond to last a lifetime or push the terrifying memories and each other far away?

There are over 170 hop participants giving away a variety of goodies, so hop along for more opportunities at great giveaways.
