Wild Ride Around The Globe

Welcome to the Sneak Peek Sunday Blog Hop for February 23, 2014. This week’s peek is at the first six paragraphs of my most recent novel, Shrouded In Secrets, an international action-adventure thriller, which takes the reader on a wild ride around the globe. Enjoy the journey.

Chapter 1 – Remote Village in Peru
Kokush inhaled the smoke from his pipe and forced the intoxicating tobacco deep into his lungs. Still, no clear visions penetrated the fog, only a feeling of dread he could not explain or expel from his mind.

The Asháninka men, bodies painted and seated on woven mats around their revered shaman, passed a hollowed-out gourd filled with thick, bitter liquid. Each man sipped the hallucinogenic drug made from a native vine and handed the bowl to the next, until the syrup was gone.

A low beat from the two-headed monkey-skin drum grew louder as a melancholy mantra emanated from the group, drowning out the deafening hum of the nighttime insects. The men rose and continued to chant and sing as they began the ancestral dance used to encourage the spirits and wise supernatural beings to communicate with Kokush. The women joined in, the ground vibrating in response to the rhythmic stomping of their feet, while the children watched from under the raised-floor houses encircling the communal area.

Flames blazed in the center of the ceremonial grounds, casting an unnatural glow over the dancers and eerie shadows skittered through the trees. A sweet smoke from the wood and herbs burning on the fire filled their nostrils, coaxing the participants into a trance-like state of mind. Moving with a graceful ease made possible by the intoxicating effect of the vine and tobacco, they waited for their ancestors to speak.

As the shaman often did, Kokush slipped silently from the circle, giving his people the illusion he had vanished and joined the spirit world. He had been taught the art of disappearing by his grandfather, which wasn’t difficult once his audience succumbed to the drugs and got caught up in the ceremonial fervor, and the thick smoke created a hazy curtain to conceal his movements.

He usually used the tactic to reinforce to the villagers that he possessed special powers and was worthy of being their spiritual leader. Tonight, he needed time to organize his thoughts and try to decide what to do. He didn’t want to frighten his people, but he was certain something evil would soon descend upon them. Unsure of what or when, how could he warn them? His gut told him they should flee, but he didn’t know how soon or how far they needed to run.

Blurb:

When the massacre of an unarmed South American village, destruction of one of the greatest manmade wonders of the world, and multiple museum thefts occur, an international team is assembled to locate a deadly group of terrorists. The team led by the ruggedly handsome, but emotionally scarred CIA agent, Cash Luker, scours the globe in an attempt to keep ahead of those striving to bring thirteen mythical relics together. As Cash’s team closes in on those responsible for the devastation he must conquer past demons in order to save the woman who has captured his heart and prevent destruction of legendary proportions.

MFRW Authors Blog

Welcome to this week’s Book Hooks blog hop, and the unveiling of my Embrace Adventure luggage tags. Here’s a little teaser from my contemporary international adventure thriller, Shrouded In Secrets. Also, comment with your email address through Thursday, February 20, 2014 and a randomly selected participant will receive a set of luggage tags.

Excerpt:

Light filled the grotto, temporarily blinding Pete. A thin woman stood, staring at him with haunting green eyes and a confident smirk. Ebony hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, she wore a black thigh-length diving suit that clung to her ample breasts and accentuated the gentle curve of her hips and trim waist. In her hand, she clutched a glistening dagger. But, what kept Pete transfixed were her eyes. The unique and beautiful shade of green didn’t exist in nature. Their almond-shape held ice and evil, and the soulless chill in her stare made him shudder.

Readers: Their Role for this Author

One of the most gratifying aspects of writing and publishing a novel for me has been the response from my readers. I’m a new author with only three books published and it still brings a smile to my face when I read a comment or receive an email from a reader who loved one of my books. I feel humbled that they actually read my book and were touched and inspired by the story. That inspires me to continue writing.

If no one read my books, who would I be writing for? Yes, it is still gratifying to finish a novel and publish it, but my end goal is to write life changing stories that affect readers’ lives with a positive impact. I’m compelled to write and know that God has given me the stories that I share with others.

Readers are number one in my eyes when I sit down to write. As I’m setting up the scene with description and delving into dialogue and creating compelling characters, I always have my readers in mind. What will she think about this story? Will he like the characters I create? Most importantly, will I write well enough for them to get the point of the message?

Before I became a writer, I was first a reader—a voracious reader at that. I couldn’t get enough of books, I still can’t. However, now, I need to balance my time more between writing and reading and everything else that’s on my plate. As a reader, I know what it’s like submersing myself into a story and getting so wrapped up in it, that I can’t wait to finish—and when I read the last line, I wish the author wrote more.

Now that I’m on the other side of the fence, I want to always keep that perspective of the reader’s mindset in mind when I write my stories. I write because it is my mission in life to share faith-filled stories and because I love to write—but I will always write for my readers and hope to bring a smile to their faces and encouragement to their spirits. For all the readers out there, you have my undying gratitude for continuing to devour books and keeping the love of reading alive and well.

Excerpt:

A swoosh of wind burst through the front door as a man entered the building. Dragging her attention away from the magazine, she turned to greet him. He hesitated for a fraction of a second as if to get his bearings before trudging through the lobby toward her. As soon as their eyes met, her words of welcome froze on her tongue and the pain began—flashes of light across her vision—tightness in her throat—intense, piercing sensations in her head. Panic and the desire to run soon followed.

She massaged her forehead, trying to rub away the stabbing pain that throbbed between her eyes, and then returned her attention to the man in front of her, pulling the computer keyboard toward her, determined to do her job despite the sudden fear gripping her insides.

She attempted her most professional tone. “Good morning. Welcome to the Inn at Purgatory. How can I help you?”

No response.

She glanced up at him. To her dismay, he presented all the indications of a panic attack. She recognized the signs well. His forehead glistened with tiny beads of sweat. The vein in his neck pulsed. Anxiety flashed in his eyes as he struggled with each new breath he took.

“Mister, are you all right?”

He braced against the counter and rubbed a hand over his face. “Yeah. It’s just…you look like someone I used to know.”

Chills ran down her spine. He wasn’t creepy, not in the least. On the contrary, she sensed an unmistakable connection to this stranger. She recoiled from the feeling, but nothing could have pried her eyes from his for a few brief, intense moments.

Author bio:

Denise Moncrief is a Southern girl, who’s lived in Louisiana all her life. And yes, she has a drawl. She's been writing off and on since she was seventeen. She has a wonderful husband and two incredible children. They not only endure her writing moods, but also encourage her to indulge her passion.
Her first “novel” was seventeen handwritten pages on school-ruled paper and an obvious rip-off of the last romance novel she read. The urge to write wouldn't let go of her. In her twenties, she started another novel, only to abandon it after Chapter Four or Five. She started writing seriously about eight years ago and has already published several stories.
